           PARLIAMENTARY PRIVATE SECRETARY APPOINTED


The appointment of Alan Johnson MP as Parliamentary Private
Secretary to Dawn Primarolo, Financial Secretary to the Treasury,
was announced today.


Alan Johnson MP (Hull West and Hessle)

Mr Johnson, 47, was elected MP for Hull West and Hessle in May
1997.

Before entering Parliament, Mr Johnson was the General Secretary
of the Communication Workers Union. He sat on the National
Executive Committee between 1995 and 1997, and was a member of
the General Council of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) between
1993 and 1995.
