Cross Cutting Review on Improving the Public Space On 25 June 2001, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Andrew Smith, announced seven initial cross-cutting reviews which will contribute to Spending Review 2002, one of which is on ‘Improving the Public Space’. This review will look at how Government policies, funding and targets can produce improvements in the safety and attractiveness of the public space – the local environment where people lead their lives. The lead minister for the review is Lord Falconer, Minister for Housing, Planning and Regeneration. In a speech to the Urban Design Alliance conference in Birmingham on 20th September, Lord Falconer detailed the work the Government is undertaking to improve the quality of the local environment. See DTLR press notice at: http://www.press.dtlr.gov.uk/0109/0398.htm (including terms of reference for the review). The review process will involve all relevant government departments and will draw on the views of practitioners and others who can provide evidence to support its work. If you want to get in touch with the cross-departmental review team for more information please email public.space@dtlr.gov.uk
